European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
